Raw onion and dry chillies chutney

This is my childhood favourite chutney, eaten especially with masala dosa , I always call it as pyaz ki chutney (onion chutney). While making masala dosa, chutney is applied in the middle of dosa and then stuffed with potato masala. This onion chutney is very spicy. I always change it according to my taste; sometimes I add chilli powder, instead of dry chillies. This chutney is very easy to make, as no roasting or frying is done. For mysore dosa also, a reddish colour chutney is applied which is spicy and tasty. Whenever I go to Bangalore I always have masala dosa and vada , which is my favourite break fast.

Ingredients

  1. Onion (medium) – 1
  2. Dry chillies – 4
  3. Tamarind paste (concentrated) – 1/2 tsp
  4. Salt - as per taste
  5. Garlic cloves – 1 or 2 (optional)

Method

  1. Cut onion roughly into chunks.
  2. Put all the ingredients in a mixer and ground it to a smooth paste.
  3. Can add water as per the requirement.
  4. Transfer it into a bowl and serve it with masala dosa.
  5. You can serve this chutney with bajji (banana fritters or chilli fritters made with besan (gram flour) batter).

Notes

  1. Sometimes I add tomato (1) in the chutney and avoid tamarind which gives different taste.
  2. Add chillies according to your spiciness.
  3. Can use any dry chillies you have round or long ones.
  4. Can put little tamarind also without seeds, according to your taste.
